Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could pursue her love for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
